A Brief History
African Book Challenge(ABC), is an outreach
ministry of Ashland Church to the children in
Kwabeng, a rural community in the Eastern Region
of Ghana, was formally established in February
2006. However, the congregation has had a
special relationship with the people of Kwabeng
for many years. In 1990, Fred Twum-Acheampong, a
native of Kwabeng and a member of Ashland
Church, brought to the attention of the
congregation the dire needs of the poor people
in his rural hometown. Having been born and
raised in that remote village, Fred was keenly
aware of the plight of his people. Consequently,
he and his family felt moved by the Spirit to
seek help in the U.S. for them. Through the
generous donations from well-wishers, they hoped
to help improve the lives of the people,
particularly the children. Since then, Ashland
Church has been reaching out in true Christian
love by providing both financial and material
assistance to the schools in the township and to
their sister church in Kwabeng.
ABC has made significant progress during its
first couple of years and will continue to
explore various options to accomplish its
objectives. In late 2006, two members of the
committee traveled to Ghana to present large
quantities of books, school supplies, toys, and
other items to the Presbyterian schools. They
also took the opportunity to organize teacher
workshops and assess the primary needs of the
pre-school and kindergarten. A second
consignment of donated school supplies, books,
used computers, toys, and used clothes will be
shipped soon. ABC depends exclusively on the
goodwill of its sponsors to finance its
programs.
Thank-you for sharing your
blessings with those in need.

our vision
To be an outreach
program to the village of Kwabeng, Ghana that seeks to support and enhance the
academic and spiritual growth of the children.
OUR MISSION
To
give every child the opportunity for the best possible educational
foundation and thereby preparing them to meet the demands of the 21st
Century.
Where and to
whom
To
the children in the Presbyterian Pre-K,
Kindergarten, and Elementary schools in Kwabeng, Ghana. These are the children of hard-working farmers who can
put food on the table, but have very little left for basic school supplies.
Little ones are expected to learn without the benefit of books, visuals, manipulatives, arts and crafts, and toys. |
